California Ammunition Laws: Background Checks, Buying, and Shipping

California regulates ammunition sales more strictly than any other state. Understanding these laws helps you purchase ammo legally and avoid potential problems.

Ammunition Background Checks

Since July 2019, California requires a background check for all ammunition purchases:

• Standard Check: $1 fee, instant for those in the system
• Basic Check: $19 fee for those not in the firearms database

The check verifies you're not prohibited from possessing ammunition.

Buying Ammunition In-Store

At a California dealer, you'll need:

• Valid California driver's license or ID
• Pass the point-of-sale background check
• Be at least 21 years old

If you're in the system from a prior firearm purchase, the check is usually instant. Otherwise, expect the $19 basic check.

Buying Ammunition Online

Online ammunition purchases must be shipped to a licensed ammunition vendor (often a gun store). Process:

1. Purchase from online retailer
2. Ship to licensed California vendor
3. Pick up in person after background check
4. Pay vendor's receiving fee

This adds cost and inconvenience compared to direct shipping in other states.

Who's Prohibited?

You cannot purchase ammunition if you:

• Are prohibited from possessing firearms
• Have certain misdemeanor convictions
• Are subject to restraining orders
• Have been adjudicated mentally ill

Bringing Ammunition Into California

You can bring ammunition into California for personal use, but:

• Cannot import for sale
• Online purchases must go through vendors
• Traveling through California with ammunition is legal

Magazine Restrictions

Magazines over 10 rounds cannot be purchased, sold, or imported. Ammunition feeding device restrictions apply to all firearms.

Armor-Piercing Ammunition

Prohibited for handguns. Check ammunition descriptions carefully.
